Bio

David Villa was born in Langreo, Asturias on 3 December 1981. Although he primarily plays in a central striker role, he is also able to function as a winger when required. A prolific goalscorer at both club and international level, he is widely regarded as one of the top strikers of his generation and one of the greatest Spanish footballers of all time.

Having played youth team football with UP Langreo from 1991, Villa signed for another of the local clubs, Sporting de Gijón, in 1999 and made his debut for the first team during the 2000-01 season. In both 2001-02 and 2002-03, he scored 20 goals in all competitions and earned a move to Real Zaragoza. Over the course of the next two seasons, he displayed a similar level of goalscoring prowess and helped the team to win the 2003-04 Copa del Rey. The summer of 2005 saw him complete a move to Valencia.

Villa's first season with his new club was a success, as he scored 28 goals in all competitions and received the Don Balón Award for Spanish Player of the Year. In 2007-08, he helped Valencia to win the Copa del Rey and in 2008-09, he reached 30 goals in all competitions for the first time in his career. During the summer transfer window of 2010, Villa signed for Barcelona for a fee of €40 million.

Throughout his three seasons with Barcelona, Villa won many major honours, including two La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey, the 2010-11 UEFA Champions League and the 2011 FIFA Club World Cup. At this time, he was often deployed as a winger, with Lionel Messi operating as the preferred central striker in a three-man attack. However, he missed the vast majority of the 2011-12 season through injury. After returning to action, he struggled to re-establish himself in the side and subsequently moved to Atlético Madrid prior to the 2013-14 campaign.

Villa made his first appearance for Spain's senior team in 2005 and played a major role in them winning both the 2008 European Championships and the 2010 World Cup. He was included in the Team of the Tournament on both occasions and won the Euro 2008 Golden Boot. In 2011, he officially replaced Raúl as Spain's top goalscorer ever, but he was forced to miss his country's Euro 2012 success due to his injury.
