The Detroit Lions are bringing in veteran CB Rashean Mathis for workouts tomorrow, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Detroit’s defense has been eviscerated so far in two preseason games, giving up 17 points to the New York Jets in their first game and 24 points to the Cleveland Browns last night. They’re in dire need of help across from starting CB Chris Houston. Ron Bartell has been ineffective, and they can’t count on their two other youngsters, Bill Bentley and Darius Slay.

Mathis has played exclusively for the Jacksonville Jaguars over the course of his 10-year career, but the Jaguars opted not to re-sign him, and the free agent market for his services has been non-existent.

His age combined with a slow recovery from an ACL tear in 2011 led to a poor season in 2012, and he’s clearly on the backend of his career. Whether he’ll be an upgrade over their current options has yet to be seen, but it certainly can’t hurt to see what he brings to the table.
