Bio

Diego López Rodríguez, typically known by the shortened name of Diego López, was born in Paradela, Galicia on 3 November 1981. A Spanish international goalkeeper, he is known for his excellent reflexes, which make him a superb shot stopper, as well as for his impressive concentration levels, which mean he is always alert to danger.

As a youngster, López spent several years playing for local side CD Lugo, before moving to Real Madrid's youth academy as an 18 year old in 2000. Between 2000 and 2005, he competed for Real Madrid's 'C' and 'B' teams, before joining the senior team for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons. After serving as backup for first choice goalkeeper Iker Casillas during those campaigns, López completed a move to Villarreal in the summer of 2007.

Initially starting as the club's second choice goalkeeper, López demonstrated fine form when provided with opportunities and eventually overtook Sebastián Viera to become the team's number one. During 2008-09, he played every minute for the side, as they finished the season in fifth place and his form continued in the seasons that followed. However, after making a total of 171 league appearances for Villarreal, the club suffered relegation at the end of the 2011–12 campaign.

Ahead of the 2012-13 season, López moved to Sevilla, where he shared goalkeeping responsibilites with Andrés Palop. However, during the January transfer window, Real Madrid re-signed López in order to provide cover for the injured Iker Casillas. He quickly impressed manager José Mourinho, who decided to stick with López even after Casillas returned to fitness, in part due to a falling out between Casillas and Mourinho. Yet, when Carlo Ancelotti replaced Mourinho as manager prior to the 2013-14 season, he too opted to play Diego López as his first choice goalkeeper.

López made his debut for Spain's senior national team in 2009 and was part of his country's 2009 Confederations Cup squad. However, he has found it difficult to break into the team on a regular basis, due to the presence of Iker Casillas, Pepe Reina and Víctor Valdés. In addition to playing for Spain, since 2005, he has played occasional friendly matches for the Galicia national team, who are not officially recognised by either FIFA or UEFA.
