The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Monday that Miami Dolphins two-time Pro Bowl DE Cameron Wake has been diagnosed with a “mild” MCL sprain in his left knee. The injury won’t require surgery and the Sun-Sentinel reports that it will “keep him on the sidelines a few days.” A few days is more likely low-balling it, as RotoWorld reports it is probably more like a 2-3 week injury.

Wake suffered the injury during the first drive of the Dolphins Week 3 win against the Falcons, and was unable to return. The talented and versatile lineman is a key part of the Dolphins pass rush. He registered 15 sacks in 2012.

In his absence, second-year man Derrick Shelby will fill in. He has played well so far this year while racking up five sacks, two sacks and two forced fumbles. The team will also need to rely more on this year’s third overall pick, Dion Jordan, to step up.

It’s in the team’s best interest to allow him ample time to heal before bringing him back. We’re still in the early stages of a long season, and the last thing that they need is an injury like this to linger.
