Dortmund will strengthen, claims Watzke

By Football News

Borussia Dortmund have the finances to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season, according to the club's CEO.

Hans-Joachim Watzke has revealed that the Bundesliga runners-up have a warchest of €50 million (£43 million) to spend as they look to reel in champions Bayern Munich.

Dortmund's only signing this summer has been defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos from Werder Bremen while the likes of Mario Goetze and Felipe Santana have both left the Westfalenstadion.

However, Watzke has urged fans to be patient and said the club are biding their time when it comes to transfer targets.

"We are still very ambitious. That means that we have €50m to spend on new players - including Sokratis [Papastathopoulos]," Watzke told Bild.

"Money can solve things pretty quickly in talks with other clubs. However, we do not only have to be ambitious from a sporting point of view, but have to make intelligent decisions financially, too.

"That's why things are taking a bit longer this summer.

"We will sign two or three attacking players and one of them will be a player for the future. I won't mention any names, though. People shouldn't let rumours on the Internet drive them crazy."

Dortmund have been linked with a number of midfielders to replace Goetze including Christian Eriksen, Henrik Mkhitaryan and Kevin De Bruyne.
