This past Thursday, we kicked off the inaugural season of the FLEX football leagues with a live draft on Sirius/XM Radio with some of the biggest hitters in the fantasy football community. Besides yours truly, the other owners consisted of Scott Pianowski (Yahoo! Sports), Jim Day (Fantasytaz.com), Ryan Hodge (Fantasy Bums), Matt Schauf (Draft Sharks), Jeff Mans (Fantasy Alarm), David Gonos (FantasySports.org), Jamey Eisenberg (CBS Sports), Eric Mack (SI.com), Nando Di Fino (CBS Sports), John Halpin (Fox Sports) and Tim Heaney (KFFL).

This is a PPR league with 12 teams, 16-man rosters (1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 Flex, 1 TE, 1 D/ST, 1 K), basic scoring among the positions and a randomly selected order to a snake draft. Besides having bragging rights over the entire fantasy expert world, we are here to show you what the experts would do if in a league just like yours.

In a league like this, there is no value, everyone is on top of hsi game, and the popular “undervalued” picks vault up the board. Oh, and the QBs, they fall… far. If there is one thing you shouldn’t take away from this draft, it’s that you will get QB values anywhere near this. Outside of that, study this draft, learn from it (even if your draft is over, you can spot waiver wire gems) and follow along all year, as I review this league weekly.

Round 1

Pick Overall Owner Player - Team - Pos.
1.01 1 Scott Pianowski: Yahoo Sports @scott_pianowski  Peterson, Adrian MIN RB
1.02 2 Jim Day: Fantasytaz @Fantasytaz  Charles, Jamaal KCC RB
1.03 3 Ryan Hodge: Fantasy Bums @TheFantasyBums  Martin, Doug TBB RB
1.04 4 Matt Schauf: DraftSharks.com @SchaufDS  McCoy, LeSean PHI RB
1.05 5 Jeff Mans: Fantasy Alarm @Jeff_Mans  Spiller, C.J. BUF RB
1.06 6 Jake Ciely: Football.com @allinkid  Richardson, Trent CLE RB
1.07 7 David Gonos: FantasySports.org @davidgonos  Foster, Arian HOU RB
1.08 8 Jamey Eisenberg: CBS Sports @JameyEisenberg  Johnson, Calvin DET WR
1.09 9 Eric Mack: SI.com @EricMackFantasy  Rice, Ray BAL RB
1.10 10 Nando Di Fino: CBS Sports @nandocbs  Lynch, Marshawn SEA RB
1.11 11 John Halpin: Fox Sports @jhalpin37  Forte, Matt CHI RB
1.12 12 Tim Heaney: KFFL @Tim_Heaney  Johnson, Chris TEN RB

As you would expect, few surprises in Round 1. With 11 RBs off the board, it goes to show the importance of the position this year, even in a PPR league. With the sixth pick (which, I am not fond of) I went upside. I said on-air that I compared Trent Richardson to Adrian Peterson when he was in college, except that he runs through defenders instead of cutting back as much as AP. I love Richardson’s talent, he has no competition for carries and we all know what Chudzinski and Turner mean for the Browns offense. The only real surprise was Heaney taking Chris Johnson with the final pick. We know what CJK can do, but will he do it is the question. I would have went Reggie Bush, whose floor has to be 60 catches. The only concern with Bush in the Lions offense is his health.

Round 2

2.01 13 Tim Heaney: KFFL @Tim_Heaney  Green, A.J. CIN WR
2.02 14 John Halpin: Fox Sports @jhalpin37  Graham, Jimmy NOS TE
2.03 15 Nando Di Fino: CBS Sports @nandocbs  Bush, Reggie DET RB
2.04 16 Eric Mack: SI.com @EricMackFantasy  Morris, Alfred WAS RB
2.05 17 Jamey Eisenberg: CBS Sports @JameyEisenberg  Jackson, Steven ATL RB
2.06 18 David Gonos: FantasySports.org @davidgonos  Bryant, Dez DAL WR
2.07 19 Jake Ciely: Football.com @allinkid  Wilson, David NYG RB
2.08 20 Jeff Mans: Fantasy Alarm @Jeff_Mans  Gore, Frank SFO RB
2.09 21 Matt Schauf: DraftSharks.com @SchaufDS  Sproles, Darren NOS RB
2.10 22 Ryan Hodge: Fantasy Bums @TheFantasyBums  Ridley, Stevan NEP RB
2.11 23 Jim Day: Fantasytaz @Fantasytaz  Jones-Drew, Maurice JAC RB
2.12 24 Scott Pianowski: Yahoo Sports @scott_pianowski  Lacy, Eddie GBP RB

Even though we moved into picks 13-24, only two more wide receivers came off the board. As expected, Jimmy Graham was a second round pick, but at what cost? I spoke with John Halpin about this on his Fantasy 15 show, and he agreed that pick 2.02 may be too early, even for Graham. Running backs are at a premium this year, and now his season hinges on his RB2 (covered below). As the first round drew to a close, the news of Andre Brown’s broken leg… well… broke (seriously, no pun intended). I was mad that the hosts (Bob Harris of Football Diehards and Mike Dempsey) mentioned it on-air. I prayed no one else was watching (eh, who am I kidding?) and wanted David Wilson to make it to pick 2.07. Luckily, he did! I have moved Wilson up to RB10 in a PPR league, even with the follow-up news that Brown could miss just 4-6 weeks. Wilson could easily have the full-time job locked up by then, and even if he doesn’t, his ability will provide RB1 value until then. I love Schauf’s value pick of Darren Sproles at 2.09. Sproles was a RB1 under Sean Payton, and I have him at RB13 in a PPR league.

Round 3

3.01 25 Scott Pianowski: Yahoo Sports @scott_pianowski  Jones, Julio ATL WR
3.02 26 Jim Day: Fantasytaz @Fantasytaz  Gronkowski, Rob NEP TE
3.03 27 Ryan Hodge: Fantasy Bums @TheFantasyBums  Marshall, Brandon CHI WR
3.04 28 Matt Schauf: DraftSharks.com @SchaufDS  Fitzgerald, Larry ARI WR
3.05 29 Jeff Mans: Fantasy Alarm @Jeff_Mans  Miller, Lamar MIA RB
3.06 30 Jake Ciely: Football.com @allinkid  Thomas, Demaryius DEN WR
3.07 31 David Gonos: FantasySports.org @davidgonos  Murray, DeMarco DAL RB
3.08 32 Jamey Eisenberg: CBS Sports @JameyEisenberg  Johnson, Andre HOU WR
3.09 33 Eric Mack: SI.com @EricMackFantasy  Cruz, Victor NYG WR
3.10 34 Nando Di Fino: CBS Sports @nandocbs  Jackson, Vincent TBB WR
3.11 35 John Halpin: Fox Sports @jhalpin37  Cobb, Randall GBP WR
3.12 36 Tim Heaney: KFFL @Tim_Heaney  White, Roddy ATL WR

This is where things become more receiver friendly. Only two RBs come off the board as opposed to nine WRs, and what’s this, Rob Gronkowski! Day loves him some tight ends – no, that’s not a crass joke – and grabs Gronk, even with the concerns. Yes, there are still concerns even though Gronk returned to practice. The talk is anywhere from Week 3 to Week 7 for Gronkowski’s return. Even if he's back for Week 3, we can now say that he is an injury risk. With Brandon Marshall, Lamar Miller, Demaryius Thomas and more still on the board, I would have passed… until Round 4 at the earliest. Schauf gets my love and then some confusion, albeit not much, as he selects Larry Fitzgerald at 3.04. I prefer Thomas, and was more than happy to have him at 3.06, but we’re likely splitting hairs.

Round 4

4.01 37 Tim Heaney: KFFL @Tim_Heaney  McFadden, Darren OAK RB
4.02 38 John Halpin: Fox Sports @jhalpin37  Ball, Montee DEN RB
4.03 39 Nando Di Fino: CBS Sports @nandocbs  Mathews, Ryan SDC RB
4.04 40 Eric Mack: SI.com @EricMackFantasy  Welker, Wes DEN WR
4.05 41 Jamey Eisenberg: CBS Sports @JameyEisenberg  Bernard, Giovani CIN RB
4.06 42 David Gonos: FantasySports.org @davidgonos  Amendola, Danny NEP WR
4.07 43 Jake Ciely: Football.com @allinkid  Bowe, Dwayne KCC WR
4.08 44 Jeff Mans: Fantasy Alarm @Jeff_Mans  Wayne, Reggie IND WR
4.09 45 Matt Schauf: DraftSharks.com @SchaufDS  Brees, Drew NOS QB
4.10 46 Ryan Hodge: Fantasy Bums @TheFantasyBums  Vereen, Shane NEP RB
4.11 47 Jim Day: Fantasytaz @Fantasytaz  Nicks, Hakeem NYG WR
4.12 48 Scott Pianowski: Yahoo Sports @scott_pianowski  Brown, Antonio PIT WR

The RBs and WRs even out more in Round 4, and our first QB goes to Schauf. Again, do NOT expect this in any of your drafts… none. If you listen to us (and most experts) you will never own Drew Brees, or any of the top QBs, as owners will draft them in Rounds 1 and 2. As mentioned with Halpin, his entire season hinges on Montee Ball, and while I love his talent, I don’t want to rest my season’s hopes on him – and John Fox sticking with Ball for that matter. Some thought this was high for Dwayne Bowe, but I actually have him ranked higher. Bowe was the 15th WR taken, and I have him at WR13. While the yardage might slip with Alex Smith, he is the best QB Bowe has ever seen and is extremely accurate. You can look for Bowe to have high best reception total ever.

Rounds 5-6

5.01 49 Scott Pianowski: Yahoo Sports @scott_pianowski  Decker, Eric DEN WR
5.02 50 Jim Day: Fantasytaz @Fantasytaz  Richardson, Daryl STL RB
5.03 51 Ryan Hodge: Fantasy Bums @TheFantasyBums  Colston, Marques NOS WR
5.04 52 Matt Schauf: DraftSharks.com @SchaufDS  Nelson, Jordy GBP WR
5.05 53 Jeff Mans: Fantasy Alarm @Jeff_Mans  Gordon, Josh CLE WR
5.06 54 Jake Ciely: Football.com @allinkid  Rodgers, Aaron GBP QB
5.07 55 David Gonos: FantasySports.org @davidgonos  Tate, Ben HOU RB
5.08 56 Jamey Eisenberg: CBS Sports @JameyEisenberg  Bradshaw, Ahmad IND RB
5.09 57 Eric Mack: SI.com @EricMackFantasy  Manning, Peyton DEN QB
5.10 58 Nando Di Fino: CBS Sports @nandocbs  Jackson, DeSean PHI WR
5.11 59 John Halpin: Fox Sports @jhalpin37  Garcon, Pierre WAS WR
5.12 60 Tim Heaney: KFFL @Tim_Heaney  Witten, Jason DAL TE

6.01 61 Tim Heaney: KFFL @Tim_Heaney  Ryan, Matt ATL QB
6.02 62 John Halpin: Fox Sports @jhalpin37  Smith, Torrey BAL WR
6.03 63 Nando Di Fino: CBS Sports @nandocbs  Davis, Vernon SFO TE
6.04 64 Eric Mack: SI.com @EricMackFantasy  Jones, James GBP WR
6.05 65 Jamey Eisenberg: CBS Sports @JameyEisenberg  Hilton, T.Y. IND WR
6.06 66 David Gonos: FantasySports.org @davidgonos  Smith, Steve CAR WR
6.07 67 Jake Ciely: Football.com @allinkid  Williams, DeAngelo CAR RB
6.08 68 Jeff Mans: Fantasy Alarm @Jeff_Mans  Newton, Cam CAR QB
6.09 69 Matt Schauf: DraftSharks.com @SchaufDS  Mendenhall, Rashard ARI RB
6.10 70 Ryan Hodge: Fantasy Bums @TheFantasyBums  Brady, Tom NEP QB
6.11 71 Jim Day: Fantasytaz @Fantasytaz  Wallace, Mike MIA WR
6.12 72 Scott Pianowski: Yahoo Sports @scott_pianowski  Gonzalez, Tony ATL TE

Pianowski is obviously not scared of the receiving situation in Denver and made Eric Decker the 19th WR selected. I have Decker much lower (WR28) in PPR leagues. It may be cliché, but there really is just one ball to go around: Marques Colston (so undervalued), Jordy Nelson, Pierre Garcon, Steve Smith and many other quality WRs have their names “called” later. Round 5 is about the time I’d take Daryl Richardson too. Don’t forget, he’s the Rams lead running back. Even with concerns over his size, Round 5 is a great spot for a team’s top RB option. Gonos reached, far, for Ben Tate to lock in his Arian Foster handcuff – yet another reason to avoid Foster, unless he comes at a great value this year. I love T.Y. Hilton’s potential, but I am far from fond of the Colts having him behind Darrius Heyward-Bey. Gonos snakes Steve Smith from me. Smith is one of the most underrated WRs for 2013. I was okay with taking DeAngelo Williams instead, though. Like Richardson, we’re talking about a starting RB at a Round 5 cost. Who knows when Jonathan Stewart will return, and Williams has shown his ability in games without Stewart in the past. Small QB run with three taken in Round 6, and all aren’t far from the value you should pay in your leagues.

Rounds 7-8

7.01 73 Scott Pianowski: Yahoo Sports @scott_pianowski  Shorts, Cecil JAC WR
7.02 74 Jim Day: Fantasytaz @Fantasytaz  Griffin III, Robert WAS QB
7.03 75 Ryan Hodge: Fantasy Bums @TheFantasyBums  Austin, Tavon STL WR
7.04 76 Matt Schauf: DraftSharks.com @SchaufDS  Williams, Mike TBB WR
7.05 77 Jeff Mans: Fantasy Alarm @Jeff_Mans  Johnson, Stevie BUF WR
7.06 78 Jake Ciely: Football.com @allinkid  Jennings, Greg MIN WR
7.07 79 David Gonos: FantasySports.org @davidgonos  Stafford, Matthew DET QB
7.08 80 Jamey Eisenberg: CBS Sports @JameyEisenberg  Givens, Chris STL WR
7.09 81 Eric Mack: SI.com @EricMackFantasy  Pierce, Bernard BAL RB
7.10 82 Nando Di Fino: CBS Sports @nandocbs  Bell, Le'Veon PIT RB
7.11 83 John Halpin: Fox Sports @jhalpin37  Moore, Lance NOS WR
7.12 84 Tim Heaney: KFFL @Tim_Heaney  Ingram, Mark NOS RB

.

8.01 85 Tim Heaney: KFFL @Tim_Heaney  Austin, Miles DAL WR
8.02 86 John Halpin: Fox Sports @jhalpin37  Luck, Andrew IND QB
8.03 87 Nando Di Fino: CBS Sports @nandocbs  Britt, Kenny TEN WR
8.04 88 Eric Mack: SI.com @EricMackFantasy  Ivory, Chris NYJ RB
8.05 89 Jamey Eisenberg: CBS Sports @JameyEisenberg  Romo, Tony DAL QB
8.06 90 David Gonos: FantasySports.org @davidgonos  Woodhead, Danny SDC RB
8.07 91 Jake Ciely: Football.com @allinkid  Tate, Golden SEA WR
8.08 92 Jeff Mans: Fantasy Alarm @Jeff_Mans  Boldin, Anquan SFO WR
8.09 93 Matt Schauf: DraftSharks.com @SchaufDS  Finley, Jermichael GBP TE
8.10 94 Ryan Hodge: Fantasy Bums @TheFantasyBums  Floyd, Michael ARI WR
8.11 95 Jim Day: Fantasytaz @Fantasytaz  Wilson, Russell SEA QB
8.12 96 Scott Pianowski: Yahoo Sports @scott_pianowski  Powell, Bilal NYJ RB

Is it possible to have someone steal your pick five spots ahead? If so, I’m still mad at Pianowski for taking my favorite WR value of 2013, Cecil Shorts. Look at his numbers in less than a full season, and with the same junk QB situation, last year. Robert Griffin’s draft position is the most fluid of any quarterback. The night prior, I took him in Round 10 of another expert’s league, and Griffin was the last of the QB1s taken (QB12). Yes, Greg Jennings sees a dropoff at quarterback… okay, a Grand Canyon-like fall… but he is still a team’s top receiving option and has the skills to make me happy to own him as my WR3. Tavon Austin goes ahead of Chris Givens, and Le’Veon Bell goes to Di Fino at 7.10 with the recent news that he many return post-bye for the Steelers. Another player Halpin and I talked about, Chris Ivory, falls all the way to Pick 88 for Mack. That is great value in my opinion. The Jets didn’t bring Ivory in to play second fiddle to Bilal Powell. We’ve seen what Powell is, and it certainly isn’t being a more-talented player than Ivory. If, and that is a big IF, Ivory stays healthy, Mack just got the steal of the draft.

Rounds 9-10

9.01 97 Scott Pianowski: Yahoo Sports @scott_pianowski  Kaepernick, Colin SFO QB
9.02 98 Jim Day: Fantasytaz @Fantasytaz  Thompkins, Kenbrell NEP WR
9.03 99 Ryan Hodge: Fantasy Bums @TheFantasyBums  Cameron, Jordan CLE TE
9.04 100 Matt Schauf: DraftSharks.com @SchaufDS  Thomas, Pierre NOS RB
9.05 101 Jeff Mans: Fantasy Alarm @Jeff_Mans  Cook, Jared STL TE
9.06 102 Jake Ciely: Football.com @allinkid  Olsen, Greg CAR TE
9.07 103 David Gonos: FantasySports.org @davidgonos  Gates, Antonio SDC TE
9.08 104 Jamey Eisenberg: CBS Sports @JameyEisenberg  Blackmon, Justin JAC WR
9.09 105 Eric Mack: SI.com @EricMackFantasy  Brown, Vincent SDC WR

10.01 109 Tim Heaney: KFFL @Tim_Heaney  Hillman, Ronnie DEN RB
10.02 110 John Halpin: Fox Sports @jhalpin37  Hopkins, DeAndre HOU WR
10.03 111 Nando Di Fino: CBS Sports @nandocbs  Vick, Michael PHI QB
10.04 112 Eric Mack: SI.com @EricMackFantasy  Rice, Sidney SEA WR
10.05 113 Jamey Eisenberg: CBS Sports @JameyEisenberg  Green-Ellis, BenJarvus CIN RB
10.06 114 David Gonos: FantasySports.org @davidgonos  Sanders, Emmanuel PIT WR
10.07 115 Jake Ciely: Football.com @allinkid  Bell, Joique DET RB
10.08 116 Jeff Mans: Fantasy Alarm @Jeff_Mans  Jackson, Fred BUF RB
10.09 117 Matt Schauf: DraftSharks.com @SchaufDS  Wright, Kendall TEN WR
10.10 118 Ryan Hodge: Fantasy Bums @TheFantasyBums  Ballard, Vick IND RB
10.11 119 Jim Day: Fantasytaz @Fantasytaz  Redman, Isaac PIT RB
10.12 120 Scott Pianowski: Yahoo Sports @scott_pianowski  Daniels, Owen HOU TE

If Ivory doesn’t stay healthy, Pianowski takes the honor with steal 1B at pick 9.01. Colin Kaepernick… in the ninth round… as QB12 and second to last starting QB taken… say what? I would immediately swap out Aaron Rodgers and Golden Tate – who I do like a lot as my WR4 – for Colin Kaepernick and Ahmad Bradshaw or Marques Colston. If only my psychic powers were working this night. Some of my frustration was alleviated by Greg Olsen at pick 9.06, as he was the ninth tight end taken and is still Cam Newton’s second best option in the passing game. We start seeing several “underrated,” “sleeper,” or whatever term you prefer, picks going to teams. Michael Floyd, Kenbrell Thompkins, Jordan Cameron (TE7), Vincent Brown and DeAndre Hopkins all are popular “upside” picks. I don’t own Reggie Bush here, as I do in many leagues, but I’ll take Joique Bell anyway. Forget Bush’s injury concerns, Bell will have PPR value even if Bush stays healthy. Di Fino takes Michael Vick as his only starting QB. Potential galore, sure, but as your only QB? Good luck my man! Maybe Day will trade one of his two (Griffin and Russell Wilson). Oh, who am I kidding? This is an expert league and trades are more difficult than figuring out what Miley Cirus’ career coach is thinking these days.

Rounds 11-12

11.01 121 Scott Pianowski: Yahoo Sports @scott_pianowski  Moreno, Knowshon DEN RB
11.02 122 Jim Day: Fantasytaz @Fantasytaz  Broyles, Ryan DET WR
11.03 123 Ryan Hodge: Fantasy Bums @TheFantasyBums  Patterson, Cordarrelle MIN WR
11.04 124 Matt Schauf: DraftSharks.com @SchaufDS  Heyward-Bey, Darrius IND WR
11.05 125 Jeff Mans: Fantasy Alarm @Jeff_Mans  Manning, Eli NYG QB

12.09 141 Matt Schauf: DraftSharks.com @SchaufDS  Davis, Fred WAS TE
12.10 142 Ryan Hodge: Fantasy Bums @TheFantasyBums  Reece, Marcel OAK RB
12.11 143 Jim Day: Fantasytaz @Fantasytaz  Pettigrew, Brandon DET TE
12.12 144 Scott Pianowski: Yahoo Sports @scott_pianowski  Davis, Knile KCC RB

Knowshon Moreno is a solid pick in Round 11, when we still don’t know how Fox will handle that situation. Everyone knocks Greg Little for “hands of stone,” but he actually improved significantly in the second half of 2012. Oh yeah, and Josh Gordon is suspended for two games. Roy Helu is a similar RB to Joique Bell and is a good Round 11 selection. Zach Sudfeld could have value even after Gronkowski returns, especially if the Patriots stick with their heavy dose of two-TE sets. Fred Davis is another great value pick for Schauf (what the heck man?!). Davis was TE1 material pre-injury, and he is showing good chemistry with Griffin in practices.

Rounds 13-14

13.01 145 Scott Pianowski: Yahoo Sports @scott_pianowski  Seahawks, Seattle SEA Def
13.02 146 Jim Day: Fantasytaz @Fantasytaz  Roberts, Andre ARI WR

14.11 167 Jim Day: Fantasytaz @Fantasytaz  Wheaton, Markus PIT WR
14.12 168 Scott Pianowski: Yahoo Sports @scott_pianowski  Taylor, Stepfan ARI RB

The first two defenses come off the board in Round 13. I might have considered the Seahawks here if they had made it to pick 13.06. I normally wait for my defense in Round 15 (and did with the Bears – happy with that), but Round 13 is where the Seahawks and 49ers start to outweigh the value at other positions. Hodge obviously didn’t expect the release of Austin Collie. To be fair, no one did, as the talent is still there, but Collie apparently isn’t at full strength after his torn patellar tendon in 2012. I like Pianowski’s Stepfan Taylor flier pick. Rashard Mendenhall is far from a safe bet to stay healthy, and Talyor is a complete RB capable of leading a rushing attack.

Mop up duty! It’s defense and kicker time with a few more fliers sprinkled in. Sam Bradford, Keenan Allen, Martellus Bennett, Stephen Hill, Jonathan Dwyer and Brandon LaFell were the only non defense or kicker picks. Apparently, all of the experts agree with what I’ve been saying for the past few weeks about Bennett: his top-notch blocking will hurt his fantasy value. The Bears are going to ask Bennett to block much more than the Giants did, which limits his upside.

Wrap Up

Of course, I’m going to say I like my team the best. In hindsight, I honestly do like my team better than I thought I would from the sixth spot. I hate the wrap-around picks, but the sixth pick generally has the toughest decision in Round 1, and I’d rather be 2-3 picks later to get the quicker turn. All of the teams are well-built (what do you expect from the top group of experts), and it's hard to pick out a clear favorite. Although, if I had to pick a team that I would want besides my own, it would be Schauf’s – or was that not evident from my gushing over several of his picks?
