2012 was not kind to Virginia Tech. The Hokies lost six games for the first time since 1992 and looked inept at times. Logan Thomas took a huge step back last year (18 TD/16 INT) and it can almost be considered a negative at this point that he’s coming back for his senior season. For the first time in a long time, expectations in Blacksburg are not high.

The Hokies would do well just to compete in this game. The Crimson Tide are rolling, capturing a national championship during a so-called rebuilding campaign last season. Bama is a three-touchdown favorite at the moment; if Virginia Tech can keep the score down that is the best it can hope for.

Early prediction: Alabama 41, Virginia Tech 14
