Football.com Day Two Mock Draft

Thirty years after the greatest quarterback draft in NFL history – and one year removed from another vintage QB class – we witnessed a first round that called the name of a single signal-caller. Florida State’s E.J. Manuel went to Buffalo with the 16th pick, surprising everyone, perhaps no one more than Ryan Nassib, Doug Marrone’s former quarterback at Syracuse (that had to be an awkward call . . . “Um, Ryan? Hi, it’s Coach. Can I talk to you for a minute?”)

The fact that it was Manuel who was the lone quarterback taken was surprising. That only one quarterback went on Thursday should not have been. We have been saying for weeks that no quarterbacks were worthy of a first round pick in this draft, at least not a top-10 selection. We’ve been preparing all along for a Friday fire sale, and that’s exactly what you can expect when Rounds 2 and 3 get underway this evening.

Two quarterbacks are likely to come off the board before ESPN takes its first commercial break. As many as six should find their new homes before the end of Round 3. It may feel as if a second-day selection is a snub, but in truth, it’s the best thing that could happen to this crop of QBs.

Think you can’t find a decent starter after Round One? Russell Wilson might beg to differ. So would Andy Dalton and Colin Kaepernick. And Matt Schaub and Marc Bulger, and a few guys named Brees, Brady and Montana.

The 2013 NFL Draft someday may become known as the Year Of Protecting And Pressuring The Quarterback. But today, finally, is the Day of the Quarterback.
