Former Air Force QB To Enroll At CU

It happened in circuitous fashion, but Jaleel Awini is finally headed to play football for Colorado.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound athlete from Aurora, Colo., a suburb of Denver, always wanted to play for the Buffs and got an offer from former coach Dan Hawkins, he told the Denver Post this week, but short-lived coach Jon Embree didn't share the same opinion.

Awini headed to Air Force instead, where he started three games at quarterback last year before a mysterious suspension in September. The academy told the Associated Press that Awini "is no longer a cadet in good standing and is not allowed to represent the Academy in any outside activities, effective immediately."

Running the triple option at Air Force, Awini completed half of his 42 pass attempts last fall and also ran for four touchdowns. He's expected to sit out 2014 and play again in 2015, though it's unclear whether he'll stay at quarterback or move to receiver.

"I learned a lot from my time at Air Force, but football is just a little more important to me than the military lifestyle," Awini said, according to the Denver Post. "The military part isn't for everybody."
