Geno Smith Likely To Start For The Jets
By Allen Kim
New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez is unlikely to be ready to play in Week 1, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. This would mean that rookie Geno Smith is going to be thrown into the fire right from the start.
The Jets open the season up against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sept. 8. It appears that CB Darrelle Revis won’t get an opportunity to pick off his former teammate, so he’ll have to settle for his team’s second-round rookie.
Smith has a chance to lock up the starting job if he can put on a strong showing against the Buccaneers. Sanchez’s future in New York is all but over this year, so it certainly can’t hurt for the Jets to see what they have in Smith.
While the Jets have officially said that Sanchez’s deep shoulder bruise is only day-to-day, there are fears that he could be out longer than just the first week of action. Sanchez still hasn’t thrown yet after suffering the injury late in the team’s preseason game against the New York Giants.
