Giants Sign RB Peyton Hillis

The New York Giants, in a move that reeks of desperation, have signed Peyton Hillis off the street to bolster their depth at running back.
David Wilson is dealing with a neck injury, Andre Brown isn’t eligible to return until Week 10 and Da’Rel Scott was waived for a second time after suffering a hamstring injury. Hillis will be joining Brandon Jacobs and Michael Cox in the backfield, and he’ll have the rest of the week to get up to speed for a matchup against the Minnesota Vikings on Monday Night Football.
“From what I understand, a lot of the terminology is the same as it was in Tampa, and so it may be a quick process,” Hillis said. “Maybe, maybe not. We’ll see.
“A lot of the plays are the same. It’s just different terminology. As long as you get the terminology down, you’ll be fine. Here though, it seems like it’s the same as Tampa’s, so it shouldn’t be that big of a (transition).”
Hillis wasn’t able to catch on in Tampa Bay even though the Buccaneers needed a backup for workhorse RB Doug Martin, and it certainly does not bode well for his chances of producing in New York. However, Hillis seems optimistic about getting another opportunity in the NFL.
“It was a very long year and going through seasons like that for coaches and players is not easy,” Hillis said. “We had a lot of other issues off the field and that compounded the situation, but you’ve got to look at every year as a new time and new place to start, and I think we’re looking forward to that now.
“I’m coming in with an open heart and open mind, and I’m looking to do whatever the coaching staff needs me to do to help this team win.”
