Bio

Jan Vertonghen was born in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium on 24 April 1987. Primarily a central defender, he is also able to play as a left back or as a defensive midfielder when necessary. Vertonghen's main attributes are his tackling, his reading of the game and his technique. In addition, he is also able to pose an attacking threat of his own, often creating chances for team mates, or hitting powerful shots with his favoured left foot.

Having started out at VK Tielrode, Vertonghen moved to Germinal Beerschot's youth team in 2000, before joining the world-renowned Ajax academy in 2003. After working his way up through the system, Vertonghen made his debut for the senior side in the first half of the 2006-07 season, but spent the second half of the campaign on loan at RKC Waalwijk in order to gain experience. Upon returning to Ajax, he initially struggled to win a place in the side due to the form of Thomas Vermaelen and John Heitinga.

Following Heitinga's departure, the 2008-09 season marked Vertonghen's breakthrough as a regular member of the starting eleven. Then, his performances over the course of the 2009-10 season resulted in widespread acclaim, as well as speculation linking him with various major European teams, including Barcelona. In 2010–11, Ajax won the Eredivisie title and prior to their successful defence of the title in 2011-12, Vertonghen was named as club captain. His performances during the 2011-12 campaign saw him named as both the Dutch Footballer of the Year and the Ajax Player of the Year.

After months of transfer rumours, Vertonghen signed for Tottenham Hotspur ahead of the 2012-13 season and adapted quickly to the demands of the Premier League, becoming a firm fan favourite. He also attracted praise from outside of the club, as he was named the Premier League Player of the Month for March 2013 and was later included in the 2012-13 PFA Team of the Year.

At international level, Vertonghen made his debut for Belgium in the summer of 2007 and has since been able to play a role in his country's rise to greater footballing prominence. When Vertonghen made his debut in 2007, Belgium were ranked outside of the top 70 teams in the world by FIFA. However, in 2013, they reached 5th place in the FIFA World Rankings; their highest ever position.
