Jets Bench Geno Smith In Favor Of Matt Simms
By Allen Kim
New York Jets coach Rex Ryan benched rookie QB Geno Smith after halftime during their loss to the Miami Dolphins. Smith was abysmal in the first half, throwing for only 29 yards and an interception on 4-of-10 attempts.
While Simms was able to outplay Smith after he came in relief of Smith in the second half, he wasn’t much better. He threw for 79 yards and an interception on 9-of-18 attempts.
This was a pivotal matchup for the Jets. A win would have kept their hopes of a playoff berth alive, but with the crowded battle for the final Wild Card spot in the AFC, they put themselves into a deep hole. They have three winnable games in their final four contests: they play the Oakland Raiders, Carolina Panthers, Cleveland Browns and Miami Dolphins to close out the season. However, in the midst of a three-game losing streak, it’s hard to see them reaching the playoffs.
No matter how the Jets end up closing out the year, the team will undoubtedly look long and hard at the draft to find that elusive franchise quarterback that has evaded them for so long. Smith has shown flashes of potential, but he’s been more bad than good. With the deep quarterback class, expect to hear of a quarterback battle in training camp next year.
