Jets Place Mark Sanchez On Short-Term IR
By Allen Kim
The New York Jets have placed QB Mark Sanchez on their injured reserve list with a designation to return, per Albert Breer of NFL.com. This means that he can’t practice for the next six weeks, and he can’t play for the next eight weeks. That places his return in Week 11 when the Jets travel to Buffalo to play the division-rival Bills.
Sanchez is going to attempt to rehab the torn labrum in his right shoulder. However, there are no guarantees that he’ll even be healthy enough to play by the time Week 11 rolls around.
Even if Sanchez is back to or near full strength by Week 11, there are no guarantees that he ever plays another snap for the Jets. Rookie QB Geno Smith, despite his poor play in the team’s first two games, has shown small glimpses of potential. If he improves over the next eight weeks and shows the team’s brass that he has a future as their starting quarterback, then Sanchez’s rehab could be all for naught.
With the Sanchez era all but over at this point, the Jets are probably better off giving their rookie as much playing time in order for him to accrue some valuable experience behind center.
