Bio

Joe Staley is a left tackle for the San Francisco 49ers. After starting his college career as a tight end at Central Michigan University, he converted to offensive line and has made three All-Pro teams with the 49ers during his seven year pro career.

Early Years & College

Staley was born on August 30, 1984 in Rockford, MI. He played tight end while playing football at Rockford High School and also set three school records as a sprinter for the track team. He continued his football career at Central Michigan, and after playing tight end as a freshman, he was moved to left tackle as a sophomore because of his size.

As a member of the Chippewas, Staley and his fellow offensive linemen helped pave the way for three straight 1,000 yard rushers. Prior to the start of his senior season in 2006, he was invited to participate in the 2007 East-West Shrine game and named to the preseason All-MAC First Team.

San Francisco 49ers

After graduating from Central Michigan, Staley showed his athleticism by running a 4.79 40 yard dash at the NFL combine. The San Francisco 49ers traded a future first round pick and a fourth round selection to the New England Patriots to move back into the first round and chose Staley with the 28th overall selection of the 2007 NFL Draft. He beat out Kwame Harris to start at right tackle and started all 16 games for the 49ers as a rookie.

He moved to left tackle prior to the start of the 2008 campaign, and after a strong season, the franchise awarded him with a six-year contract extension. From 2011-2013, Staley earned All-Pro First Team honors and made the Pro Bowl while helping the 49ers reach the NFC Championship game three straight seasons.
