Julian Edelman, now entering his sixth NFL season, has played his entire career with the New England Patriots. Edelman, a versatile wide receiver and return man, has seen his playing time ebb and flow in head coach Bill Belichick’s system, but he’s coming off a banner 2013 campaign that saw him rack up career highs in receptions (105), yards (1,056) and touchdowns (6).
Early Years & College
Edelman was born in Redwood City, Calif., on May 22, 1986. Edelman played quarterback at Woodside High School and led his team to a 13-0 record as a senior. After graduating, he played quarterback at Kent State, leading them in passing yards (1,820) and rushing yards (1,370). Despite the gaudy numbers, he wasn’t invited to the 2009 NFL Combine.
New England Patriots
Edelman, who was drafted in the seventh round of the NFL draft (232nd overall), started training camp as a wide receiver and possible Wildcat toy for head coach Bill Belichick. In his rookie year, he saw significant playing time in the slot role when Wes Welker went down and concluded his campaign with two postseason touchdowns. He’s been Mr. Everything for the Patriots over the years, spending time returning punts, spread out at wide receiver and even in the defensive secondary. In a 2012 rout of the Indianapolis Colts, Edelman racked up a career-best 222 all-purpose yards, with two scores. He inked a four-year, $17 million deal on March 25, 2014.
