Bio

K.J. Wright plays outside and middle linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks. He was a three-year starter at Mississippi State University and started for Seattle’s Super Bowl XLVIII squad during the 2013 season.

Early Years

Wright was born on July 23, 1989 in Memphis, TN and lettered in football and basketball at Olive Branch High School in Olive Branch, MS. As a senior for the Conquistadors, he made 91 tackles and racked up 13.0 sacks while leading the school to a 12-2 record. He was a First-Team All-State pick as a linebacker and was selected to play in the annual Mississippi/Alabama All-Star Classic. He received multiple scholarship offers from Southeastern Conference schools and chose to continue his playing career at Mississippi State University.

Mississippi State University

As a member of the Mississippi State Bulldogs, Wright saw limited action in 10 games as a true freshman in 2007. He was installed as a full-time starter at outside linebacker the following season, starting all 12 games for the Bulldogs and making 72 tackles and 4.0 sacks. He opened his junior season as a reserve with the team changing defensive schemes, but returned to the starting lineup after two games and wrapped up the season with 81 tackles and 2.0 sacks. As a senior in 2010, he started all 13 games and nearly made 100 tackles while breaking up nine passes and adding 4.0 sacks.

Seattle Seahawks

With only two seasons as a full-time starter in college under his belt, Wright was viewed as an average draft prospect at his position. The Seattle Seahawks drafted him with the 99th pick in the fourth round of the 2011 NFL Draft. Initially, he was a backup to former first round pick Aaron Curry, but after Curry struggled during the team’s first two games, Wright replaced him in the starting lineup. As a rookie, he appeared in all 16 games for the Seahawks, making 50 tackles and 2.0 sacks while also returning a fumble for a touchdown. He followed up with 98 and 80 tackle seasons in 2012 and 2013 respectively, helping lead Seattle to the playoffs both years and a Super Bowl XLVIII victory.
