Bio

Leighton Baines was born in Kirkby, Merseyside on 11 December 1984. An attack-minded England international left back, he is primarily known for his crossing, dribbling skills and accurate passing. Baines' tendency to shoot from long-range and his ability to take accurate set pieces also make him a direct goal threat.

Baines joined Wigan Athletic in 2001 as a youth team player and graduated to the senior side the following year. After making six league appearances during the team's Division 2 promotion campaign of 2003-03, he featured more regularly the following year. Then, in 2004-05, he was an important part of the side which gained promotion to the Premier League. Despite interest from various other Premier League teams, Baines opted to stay with Wigan and helped them to avoid relegation and reach the League Cup final in 2005-06. After impressing with his performances in the 2006-07 campaign, Baines secured a move to Everton for a fee of around £6 million.

Initially, Baines struggled to cement his place in the starting eleven, due to the form of Joleon Lescott at left back. However, as Lescott moved into central defence, Baines increased his playing time during the 2008-09 season and subsequently demonstrated his ability with a string of impressive displays. In the years that followed, he became a key player for the side, being voted as the Everton Players' Player of the Year for 2009–10, 2010–11 and 2012–13. His performances during both the 2011–12 and 2012–13 campaigns also resulted in Baines being included in the PFA's Premier League Team of the Year. Despite being linked with transfers to several big clubs during his time at Everton, including Bayern Munich and Manchester United, Baines remained with The Toffees and signed a new four-year extension to his contract in January 2014.

Having previously represented England at under-21 level, Baines earned his first cap for the senior team in 2010 and has since battled to establish himself as the country's number one left back. Although he was included in the squad for Euro 2012, he did not play any of the games, as manager Roy Hodgson preferred Ashley Cole in his position.
