Bio

Born in Gelsenkirchen on 27 March 1986, German international Manuel Neuer is widely regarded as one of the world's best goalkeepers. A solid all-rounder, he is especially known for his excellent reflexes, which enable him to make difficult saves, as well as for his excellent distribution, which helps to start attacking moves for his team. Neuer cites former Arsenal and Schalke goalkeeper, Jens Lehmann, as his idol.

Neuer played youth team football for Schalke 04 from 1991 until 2005, when he signed his first professional contract. He made his debut for the senior team during the 2006-07 season and soon became the club's first choice goalkeeper, seeing off competition from Frank Rost. During the 2007-08 campaign, he impressed with his performances in the UEFA Champions League and made the shortlist for the UEFA Club Goalkeeper of the Year Award. In the 2010-11 season, he helped the club to win the DFB-Pokal and was named as the Footballer of the Year in Germany. However, prior to 2011-12, he moved to Bayern Munich for a fee of €22million.

Since arriving at Bayern, Neuer has consolidated his standing as one of Europe's elite goalkeepers. In 2012-13, he played a vital role in the side that won the Bundesliga title, the UEFA Champions League and the DFB-Pokal. He was named in the UEFA Team of the Year and the FIFA/FIFPro World XI for 2013 and was voted as the Fans' Man of the Match for the 2013 UEFA Champions League final.

At international level, Neuer earned his first cap in June 2009 and became a regular in the squad soon after. Following Robert Enke's tragic death in November 2009 and an injury to René Adler, he emerged as his country's first choice goalkeeper and played in both the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2012 European Championships. His performances at Euro 2012 earned him a place in the Team of the Tournament.
