Bio

Mario Gómez García, usually shortened to Mario Gómez, was born in Riedlingen, West Germany on 10 July 1985. A prolific centre forward, he is known for his hold up play, his off-the-ball movement, his aerial ability and his lethal finishing. Gómez is comfortable with either foot and anticipates crosses well, making him a constant threat to opponents.

Having joined VfB Stuttgart's youth team in 2001, Gómez made the breakthrough to the club's first team squad during the 2003-04 season. His Bundesliga debut came in May 2004, although he did not begin to make regular appearances for the team until the 2005–06 season and was not able to score his first goal for the club until September 2005. In 2006–07, Gómez reached double figures for goals and helped the team to win the Bundesliga title. As a result, he was named the German Footballer of the Year. Over the next two seasons, he became even more prolific in front of goal and earned a move to Bayern Munich ahead of the 2009–10 season.

During his time at Bayern, Gómez quickly established himself as the club's first choice striker and enjoyed major success, helping the team to win a Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double in 2009–10 and a Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions League treble in 2012–13. In the 2010-11 campaign, he was the Bundesliga's top goalscorer, while in 2011-12, he scored more than 40 goals in all competitions for the first time.

However, during the 2012-13 season, he fell behind Mario Mandžukić as Bayern's starting striker and became linked with a move away from the club. Despite his limited first team opportunities, Gómez still contributed 19 goals in all competitions and made a late appearance as a substitute in the Champions League final success over Dortmund. In the summer of 2013, he completed a €20 million move to Serie A side Fiorentina.

After playing at various youth levels, Gómez made his debut for Germany's senior national team in 2007. He has subsequently earned more than 50 caps for his country and has appeared in several major international tournaments. At Euro 2012, he finished as one of the competition's joint top goalscorers.
