Bio

Mario Mandžukić was born in Slavonski Brod, SFR Yugoslavia on 21 May 1986. Primarily a centre forward, throughout his career he has also demonstrated an ability to play as a left winger. His main attributes are his heading ability, his off-the-ball movement, his hold up play and his finishing, while he has also received praise for his willingness to track back and help his team out defensively.

After joining the TSF Ditzingen youth academy in 1992, Mandžukić made the move to NK Marsonia in 1996. It was for Marsonia that he made his professional debut in 2004 and he quickly found goalscoring form, finding the back of the net 14 times in 23 games during the 2004-05 season. In the summer of 2005, he moved to NK Zagreb and subsequently spent two seasons with the club, impressing with his performances. Despite being linked with various English Premier League clubs, including Chelsea and Manchester United, he joined Croatian giants Dinamo Zagreb in the 2007 summer transfer window, replacing their departing striker, Eduardo da Silva.

During his time with Dinamo Zagreb, Mandžukić helped the club to win league titles in 2007–08, 2008–09 and 2009–10, as well as the Croatian Cup in 2007–08 and 2008–09. During the 2008-09 campaign, he was the league's top goalscorer and was awarded the Sportske Novosti Yellow Shirt, which is given to the division's best player. In July 2010, he transferred to VfL Wolfsburg for a fee of around €7 million. After starting out as a left winger, he was moved into a more familiar central striker role and became Wolfsburg's top scorer for the 2011-12 season.

Mandžukić's performances soon attracted the attention of Bayern Munich, who signed him in June 2012. He quickly established himself in the first team, helping the side to a Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and Champions Leagueb treble in 2012-13 and scoring 22 goals in all competitions.

At international level, Mandžukić has represented Croatia since November 2007. After impressing with his performances during qualifying, he was selected as part of the country's squad for UEFA Euro 2012. During the tournament, he scored three goals, which made him one of the competition's joint top goalscorers. In both 2012 and 2013, he was voted as the Croatian Footballer of the Year.
