Nick Foles is entering his third season with the Philadelphia Eagles. Foles took over for an injured Michael Vick midseason, in 2013, and enjoyed a breakout campaign despite losing a competition for the starting quarterback job in training camp. He guided the Eagles to the NFC East crown – the Eagles first since 2010 -- and led the entire NFL in QB rating (119.2), while setting an Eagles record by going 237 straight pass attempts without an interception. He also became the first quarterback since 1960 to post a 149.0 QB rating in consecutive games, including a seven-touchdown performance against Oakland.
Early Years & College
Foles was born in Austin, Texas, on Jan. 20, 1989. He attended Westlake High where he was a three-year starter and broke school records for passing yards (5,658) and touchdowns (56), marks previously held by Saints quarterback Drew Brees. After graduating, Foles spent one uneventful year at Michigan State before leaving a crowded quarterback huddle and transferring to Arizona. He finished his college career as Arizona’s all-time leader in passing yards (10,011), touchdowns (67), attempts (1,396) and completions (933).
Foles was selected in the third round of the 2012 NFL draft (88th overall). Foles, an unassuming and quiet leader, enjoyed a successful rookie year, winning the backup job outright and filling in admirably for an injured Vick. Despite a disappointing 1-5 record as a starter in 2012, Foles completed 60.8-percent of his passes and set Eagles’ rookie passing records for yards, attempts and completions. In 2013, after another injury to Vick, Foles posted an 8-2 record and threw for 2,891 yards while completing 64-percent of his passes. After leading the Eagles to the playoffs, culminating in a first-round loss to New Orleans, Foles was named as an alternate to the Pro Bowl. He went 7-of-10 for 89 yards and a touchdown to earn the game’s Offensive MVP award. Foles enters the 2014 season fully entrenched as the Eagles’ starting quarterback.
