Notre Dame's Nix III Out For Air Force
Defensive lineman Louis Nix III will not travel with the Irish for the game against Air Force this weekend.
The 6-foot-2, 342-pound Nix, named a preseason All-American by several publications, left Notre Dame's win over USC last week with a shoulder injury. Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly also held Nix from practice this week.
Senior Kona Schwenke will take over for Nix on the starting defensive line.
The Fighting Irish reported other injury news as well. Right guard Christian Lombard, who underwent surgery to remove a herniated disk, is out for the rest of the season but hopes to return for his final year of eligibility in 2014. Freshman right tackle Steve Elmer will fill in for Lombard.
Quarterback Tommy Rees, who was taken out of the game against USC last week with a neck strain, reported Wednesday that he is confident he will start this weekend, according to The Chicago Tribune's Brian Hamilton.
"Going out there and practicing, it was good to be back out there with the guys," Rees said, according to Hamilton. "I feel good right now and I'm going to continue to feel better throughout the week."
