Bio

Olivier Giroud was born in Chambéry, France on 30 September 1986. A tall and strong centre forward, he is known for his hold up play, heading ability and intelligent movement in the box. Despite being a full international, Giroud is seen as something of a late bloomer in terms of top level football, having played in France's lower divisions until he was approaching his mid-20s and having never represented his country at any youth level.

Giroud started his career with local side Olympique Club de Froges, before joining Grenoble's youth academy in 1999. During the 2005-06 season, he began to play for the reserve team in the country's fifth tier and was prolific at that level, scoring 15 goals in 15 games. As a result, he earned a call up to the first team towards the end of their Ligue 2 campaign. The 2006-07 season brought about his first goal for the club, however, with starting opportunities limited, he went on loan to third division Istres for the duration of 2007-08. With Grenoble reaching the top division, Giroud was deemed surplus to requirements and moved to Ligue 2 side Tours in May 2008.

Throughout the 2009-10 campaign, he managed to score 21 league goals and was named as the Ligue 2 Player of the Year. He subsequently earned a move to Ligue 1 side Montpellier and quickly established himself as an important first team player there. In the 2010-11 season, Montpellier beat Paris Saint Germain in the semi finals of the Coupe de la Ligue, with Giroud scoring the winning goal in extra time. Although they eventually lost the final, it served as a platform to build upon and in 2011-12, the team were able to pull off a shock Ligue 1 title win.

Giroud finished that season as the division's top goalscorer and caught the attention of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, who signed him in the summer of 2012 as a replacement for Robin van Persie. The move to Arsenal increased his profile and Giroud impressed with his performances, scoring 17 goals throughout the 2012-13 season and improving upon that tally the following year.

On the international stage, Giroud made his debut for France in November 2011. He scored his first goal for the team in a 2-1 victory over Germany in February 2012 and was later included in France's squad for Euro 2012.
