New England Patriots RT Sebastian Vollmer is likely to miss the rest of the 2013 season with a broken right leg. He had surgery earlier today, and the Patriots now have to decide whether they will leave him on the roster with the hope that he can return for the playoffs or place him on injured reserve and officially end his year.

Dolphins DL Randy Starks rolled up on Vollmer’s leg, and he had to be carted off the field with an air cast. Marcus Cannon took Vollmer’s place in the lineup.

“It’s a tough loss to see Sebastian get carted off like that,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said after the game. “He’s been such a great player for us and such a great teammate. I thought Marcus (Cannon) went in there and did a good job.”

Vollmer is one of the best right tackles in the NFL, and he was rewarded with a four-year, $17 million contract in the offseason. His loss is a significant blow to their offensive line.
