The New England Patriots announced today that they have placed RB Shane Vereen on injured reserve with a designation to return. The initial prognosis had Vereen out for 4-6 weeks, but it appears that the Patriots downplayed the severity of his recovery timetable.

Vereen can resume practicing in Week 8, but he won’t be able to play until after Week 9. Since the Patriots have a bye in Week 10, the earliest Vereen can return to the lineup is in Week 11.

After Vereen’s Week 1 explosion for 101 yards on the ground and 58 through the air against the Buffalo Bills, it’s clear that he had carved out a more significant role for himself on offense. However, they’ll have to lean on Stevan Ridley as their workhorse back until Vereen is fully recovered.

The Patriots will be shorthanded on Thursday against the New York Jets with Danny Amendola out and Rob Gronkowski still waiting for clearance. Vereen’s absence was already expected, but losing him until Week 11 is a serious blow to their offense.

New England signed TE Matthew Mulligan to take Vereen’s spot on the roster, but the four-year veteran isn’t expected to add a whole lot to their offense. Tom Brady will have to make do with what the Patriots already have and hope at least one of those players steps up.
