Patriots' Vince Wilfork Achilles Torn, Season Over
By Allen Kim
As if the pressure weren’t high enough already, the New England Patriots offense may have to shoulder a heavier load after their defense suffered a major blow.
NT Vince Wilfork exited Sunday night’s Week 4 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons after suffering an injury to his right foot. A cart was brought onto the field to take him off, and he emerged from the locker room sporting a protective walking boot while moving around with a noticeable limp. Shalise Young of the Boston Globe reports that Wilfork tore his Achilles, which will more than likely end his season.
Wilfork, a team captain, is without question one of the most valuable members of the team’s defense. Losing the anchor of their defensive line will hurt, particularly against the run. He’s been named an All-Pro in each of the last three seasons, and he’s also made regular trips to the Pro Bowl over that same span.
Tommy Kelly, Joe Vellano and Chris Jones are behind Wilfork on the depth chart, and they aren’t even remotely close to being able to match Wilfork’s production and presence. The Patriots may have to take a look on the open market and see if they can add a body or two to help out in the trenches.
