Very lightly regarded out of high school, Quinn Kaehler emerged as the San Diego State starter in 2013 and, though he didn’t light the world on fire, and he missed spring practice with an elbow issue, he looks like the de facto starter for 2014.
High School & Junior College
Lightly regarded out of California High School in San Ramon, Calif., Kaehler threw for 1,500 yards and nine overall touchdowns his senior year. That led him to Diablo Valley College where the chance to blossom emerged. He played two years at Diablo and in 2012, things fell into place. He went 309-for-511 through the air for 4,044 yards and 38 touchdowns against 12 picks, which finally drew interest from four-year schools.
Joined San Diego State’s 2013 spring practice as a walk-on and ended up starting from the second week on. He passed for 3,007 yards and 19 touchdowns while hitting on nearly 60 percent of his passes. He became only the ninth Aztec quarterback to surpass 3,000 yards passing and ranked ninth in the country in passing yards per game at 250.6. Had seven multiple touchdown games in 2013 and never passed for less than 200 yards in his 11 starts.
