Raiders Waive Goethel and Francies
By Bess Shapiro
Linebacker Travis Goethel and defensive back Coye Francies have both been waived by the Oakland Raiders just as training camp begins, according to the list of official NFL transactions. With these moves, Oakland has created room on its roster and would greatly benefit from a defensive end to improve its pass rush.
According to the NFL, Goethel was waived with no recall and Francies was waived for failing to disclose a physical condition. Francies, 26, was prominent as a kick returner for the Raiders. Last year he had three combined tackles and led Oakland with 475 yards on 20 kickoff returns, with his longest going for 32 yards. He played in 15 games, all as a reserve.
Goethel, 25, appeared in eight games last year as a backup. He managed two combined tackles, but he tore his ACL in November, which ended his season. Two years ago, he suffered a knee injury that forced him to miss all of 2011. According to analysts, because of Goethel’s limited production and activity, the Raiders could no longer wait for him to get healthy.
