Red Stars Fall 2-0 at Home to Undefeated Portland - Alex Morgan with Both Assists
By Kim Tate
In their second match of the inaugural NWSL season, the Red Stars lost a hard-fought battle at home courtesy 0f two Alex Morgan assists to set up Danielle Foxhoven in the 70th minute, and Christine Sinclair in the 80th.
Offensively, neither team had spectacular chances in the first half; Red Stars goalkeeper Erin McLeod got a look at the ball a few times, but it was largely a game of possession.
At the 27th minute mark, Chicago had a free kick chance from the halfway mark, which would be punched out by Portland goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc. Morgan was largely shut down by the Red Stars defense and had little contact with the goal.
In the second half, the Thorns and the Red Stars would both have chances on goal, but it was Portland that would come out on top. Portland’s first goal was scored by substitute Foxhoven, after McLeod deflected a shot of Morgan from the top of the eighteen-yard box. Despite a tight Red Stars defense, Thorns FC still found their way through and finished with a perfectly placed ball right into the center of the net.
At 80 minutes, Morgan would have her second assist when she found Sinclair inside the eighteen-yard box for an easy goal that put the Thorns up by 2.
The Red Stars made a few attempts to come back, with shots on goal by Lori Chalupny and substitute Julianne Sitch that were saved by LeBlanc. Ultimately, the Red Stars played a strong first half, but the Thorns came out the stronger team in the second.
“I don’t think we did exactly what we wanted to do with our game plan, so we’re going to learn from this,” said co captain Leslie Osborne in front of media post-game. “It’s an early game, so I think we have a lot to build off.”
Coach Rory Dames commented on team chemistry and the need to progress in performance. “I don’t think we have a lot of things to correct,” he said. “We just need to keep getting better.”
Chicago are on the road for their next two games: they travel to Boston next Saturday to face the Boston Breakers, and only four days later on May 8th they will travel to New Jersey to take on Sky Blue FC. They return home to Lisle for a rematch against Portland on May 12th.
