Riley Cooper Excused From Eagles For Counseling
By Allen Kim
The embattled wide receiver for the Philadelphia Eagles, Riley Cooper, has been excused from all team activities as he seeks counseling following the leak of a racially-charged outburst caught on video. The Eagles announced the news through their Twitter account earlier today.
It’s not yet clear how long he’ll be away from the team and whether he’ll still have a place on the roster when he returns. The Eagles are desperate for help at the receiver position, so there’s at least a decent chance he’ll still have a place on the team if and when he comes back.
However, with teammates like LeSean McCoy clearly uncomfortable having Cooper around, anything can happen. There was reportedly some tension and awkwardness at training camp the following day as Cooper was seen standing by himself on the sidelines, and that type of behavior could easily carry over into the regular season.
Cooper is a locker-room distraction waiting to happen, and coach Chip Kelly certainly can’t afford any division among his players in his first year as a head coach in the NFL. He’s by no means an indispensable player, and his future in the NFL may very well be in jeopardy.
