Bio

Wayne Rooney was born in Croxteth, Liverpool on 24 October 1985 and is widely regarded as one of the most talented English footballers of all time. Although primarily a centre-forward, Rooney has demonstrated great versitility throughout his career, playing on occasion as a winger and as a central midfielder. He is known for his work rate, power, technical ability, creativity and goalscoring prowess.

Rooney is a product of Everton's youth academy, which he joined at the age of nine. After setting goalscoring records at junior level, including more than 100 goals in just 29 games at under-11 level in 1995–96, he made his competitive debut for the senior team as a 16-year-old in 2002. During the 2002-03 season, he came to national attention after scoring the winning goal against Arsenal, ending their 30-match unbeaten run in the process. Throughout the remainder of that campaign and the 2003-04 season, he established himself as one of the hottest prospects in world football. At the age of 18, he moved to Manchester United for a fee of around £25 million.

It took little time for Rooney to settle in at his new club, as he scored a hattrick against Fenerbahçe on his debut in September 2004. At the end of his first season, he was named the PFA Young Player of the Year. Since that time, Rooney has experienced huge levels of success with the club, winning multiple Premier League titles and the 2007-08 UEFA Champions League. His performances in the 2009-10 season earned him the PFA Players' Player of the Year, PFA Fans' Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year awards.

At international level, Rooney currently ranks as one of England's all-time top goalscorers and has represented his country in numerous major tournaments. He has twice been named England Player of the Year, in 2008 and 2009, while his performances at UEFA Euro 2004 saw him named in the Team of the Tournament.
