Bio

Samir Handanović was born in Ljubljana, SFR Yugoslavia on 14 July 1984. A Slovenian international goalkeeper, he is known for his agility and reflexes and has been nicknamed 'Spiderman' by supporters. Handanović is also considered a penalty specialist and he currently holds the record for most penalty saves during a single Serie A season, after saving six spot kicks in 2010-11.

After beginning his career in his home country with Domžale, during which time he also enjoyed a loan spell with Zagorje, Handanović completed a move to Italy in 2004, joining Udinese. After playing three matches during the 2004–05 campaign, at the age of just 20, he was sent on loan to both Treviso and Lazio for the 2005–06 season. However, he failed to establish himself at either club, making just three appearances for Treviso and just one appearance for Lazio.

The 2006-07 season saw Handanović once again sent on loan, this time to Serie B side Rimini. Over the course of the campaign, he impressed observers, helping the team to finish in fifth place and eventually being voted as the division's second best goalkeeper, behind Gianluigi Buffon. Although Rimini tried to make the deal permanent before the 2007-08 campaign, Udinese rejected the offer and decided to bring Handanović back into their first team picture.

Upon returning to Udinese, Handanović established himself as the first choice goalkeeper, replacing Morgan De Sanctis as the club's number one and making a total of 36 appearances in all competitions in 2007-08. Over the years that followed, he continued to put in assured performances and made international headlines with his penalty saving exploits in 2010–11. Despite signing a five year contract with Udinese in the summer of 2011, Handanović spent just one more season with the club, before completing a move to Internazionale in the 2012 summer transfer window. During his first season with Inter, he appeared in 48 matches in all competitions, firmly establishing himself as the first choice goalkeeper.

Having previously represented Slovenia at both under-19 and under-21 level, Handanović made the step up to the senior team in 2004 and has since become a regular for the side. He was included in his country's squad for the 2010 World Cup.
