Bio

Stefan Kießling was born in Lichtenfels, West Germany on 25 January 1984. A tall, prolific centre forward, he is known for his excellent aerial ability, his neat touches and his deadly finishing.

Kießling began his career in Eintracht Bamberg's academy, before joining Nürnberg's youth team and graduating to the senior ranks in 2003. He made his Bundesliga debut during the 2002-03 season, but was unable to make his second appearance until the 2003–04 campaign, during which Nürnberg played in the second tier. Over the course of that season, he played 14 games and scored two goals, helping the team to return to the top flight. He became a Bundesliga regular in 2004–05 and then reached double figures for goals for the first time in 2005-06. As a result, he secured a transfer to Bayer Leverkusen ahead of the 2006-07 season.

Upon joining Leverkusen, Kießling continued to impress with his performances and became an important first team player. Gradually, his goal ratio improved and in the 2009-10 campaign, he reached the 20 goal mark for the first time in his career, finishing the season as the Bundesliga's second highest goalscorer. Although he was less prolific the following year, he helped the team to mount a serious title challenge and they eventually finished as Bundesliga runners up.

The 2012-13 season brought with it a strong return to goalscoring form and he ended the year with 25 goals in 33 games, making him the top scorer in the division, one goal ahead of Robert Lewandowski. In October 2013, Kießling was involved in the most controversial incident of his career, as he scored what became known as a "ghost goal" against Hoffenheim. Despite missing the target with a header, the ball passed through a small hole in the side of the net and the officials incorrectly ruled it to be a legitimate goal.

On the international stage, Kießling played for Germany at various youth levels, before making his first appearance for the senior side in 2007. He was subsequently selected as a member of the 2010 World Cup squad and made two appearances during the competition. However, a dispute with manager Joachim Löw hindered his career with the national team, with Kießling claiming he would refuse to join up with the squad again whilst Löw was still head coach.
