Tamba Hali is an outside linebacker for the Kansas City Chiefs. He has played his entire eight-year career with Kansas City, earning All-Pro honors twice and playing in four Pro Bowls.
Hali was born in Monrovia, Liberia on November 3, 1983. He moved away from war-ravaged Liberia at age ten to join his father in the United States. He attended Teaneck High School in Teaneck, NJ, where he played football and basketball. Following his senior season, he was named a high school All-American and labeled the top overall college football prospect in New Jersey. He received multiple scholarship offers and chose to attend Penn State University.
Penn State University
Hali joined the Nittany Lions in 2002 to play defensive line for legendary coach Joe Paterno. Following his senior season in 2005, he was named an All-American and selected as the Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year. He led Penn State to an 11-1 season and helped Penn State win the Orange Bowl that year. His 11 sacks led the Big Ten and he was named a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which is given to the nation’s best defensive player. He finished his college career with the sixth-most sacks in school history and also ranks tenth all-time on Penn State’s career tackles for loss list.
Kansas City Chiefs
The Kansas City Chiefs drafted Hali with the 20th overall pick of the 2006 NFL Draft and he was named a starter at defensive end during training camp. As a rookie, he led the Chiefs with eight sacks and finished with a higher sack total than top overall draft pick Mario Williams. After moving to outside linebacker in 2009, Hali had a career year in 2010 with 14.5 sacks, leading to his first All-Pro team and Pro Bowl invitation.
Hali collected double-digit sacks again in 2011 and 2013, bringing his career sack total to 73.5 sacks. He currently sits third on the franchise’s all-time sack list behind Hall of Fame linebacker Derrick Thomas and defensive end Neil Smith. After making 11.0 sacks in 2013, he made his second career All-Pro team as an outside linebacker.
