High School

Armstrong attended Cibolo Steele High School in Texas and led them to the 5A state title game in his junior and senior seasons. Armstrong rushed for 1,281 yards as a senior and 16 touchdowns. In the game he threw for 169 yards and a touchdown. While splitting time with Kellogg against Purdue a few weeks later, Armstrong scored his first career rushing touchdown.

Armstrong finished the season with a very impressive 7-1 record as a starter, including a 24-19 win over Georgia in the Gator Bowl. Against the Bulldogs he threw for 169 yards and two touchdowns, including a 99-yard strike in the third quarter to put Nebraska up by 12. He tallied a season-long 24-yard touchdown run as well. Overall he threw for 966 yards and nine touchdowns in 2013 while rushing for 202 yards and two scores. The Big Ten Network selected him as an Honorable Mention for their All-Freshman Team.
