Record: 13-0, 8-0 to win MWC

Final Coaches’/AP poll ranks: 2/4

Postseason: Defeated Alabama, 31-17, in Sugar Bowl

We now move up a level as we’ve narrowed the field down to a clear top three — any of which is deserving of the No. 1 overall ranking. These Utes were the pick of the strong ’08 MWC litter and featured the conference’s offensive player of the year in senior QB Brian Johnson and five 2009 NFL Draft picks, led by sophomore DE Paul Kruger and junior CB Sean Smith. The end result was a perfect season for coach Kyle Whittingham’s squad, highlighted by regular-season wins over nationally-ranked Michigan (25-23), TCU (13-10) and BYU (48-24) and capped with the shocking Sugar Bowl victory over the Crimson Tide. Oh, and since then, all Alabama has done is go 49-5 and win three of the last four national titles.
