Antonio Gates was never supposed to be an NFL player. The NCAA basketball star was destined for a NBA career but was told he would not make it to the NBA out of Kent State. Instead, Gates got a workout with the San Diego Chargers and the rest, they say, is history.
Gates made the Chargers and has since become one of the best receiving tight ends in the NFL. Gates has pulled in 642 receptions for 8,321 yards and 83 touchdowns in his career while being named an All Pro and also being named to the 2000's All-Decade team.

They both fall on years where other players just happen to be a little better. In the case of Austin it was very close between him and Grimes, but Austin's inability to stay healthy helped Grimes. In the case of Romo, he just fell into a loaded class of undrafted free agents in 03. Gates is arguably one of the best tight ends to play the game when it comes to his stats. Both guys very good hauls for the Cowboys, just not good enough to be on the list.
Tony Romo? Miles Austin?
