USA all set for warm up match against Guatemala in San Diego

By Kim Tate

For the first time since 2006, the US Men's National Team will play in front of a crowd in San Diego at Qualcomm Stadium ahead of their first match in the 2013 Gold Cup. Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann stated that the starting group for this match will be considered favorties for the starting XI in the Gold Cup.

Against Guatemala, the US is 13-4-6 since their first series in 1977 when Guatemala hosted and won all of the first four matches. USA has posted a 19-game unbeaten streak (13-0-6) against Guatemala since their 1-0 loss to the visitors on January 10, 1988. No US player on this roster has ever scored against Guatemala.

Six players on this US roster play professionally in Mexico, which would be the most ever on a US squad. Joe Corona and Edgar Castillo have been paired at Club Tijuana and are coming off another historic run there, making it to the quarterfinals of Copa Libertadores before bowing out to Atletico Mineiro based on away goals. They were joined by Herculez Gomez, who came over from Club Santos Laguna in the offseason. Gomez reached the Liga MX semi finals with Club Santos Laguna and the final in a rematch against Monterrey in CONCACAF Champions League. He boasted 11 goals in all competitons for the Guerreros.DaMarcus Beasley is paired with Michael Orozco Fiscal at Puebla, and Jose "Gringo" Torres plays for Tigres.

Returning veterans:

Landon Donovan (28 appearances, 13 goals in Gold Cup play) has made his return to the US National Team in this squad. The last time he saw minutes with the US was in August when he played 45 minutes in the USA's 1-0 win against Mexico.

Oguchi Onyewu is suiting up for the first time since June of 2012, when he came on as a sub in a 3-1 win over Antigua & Barbuda in the game that kicked off the USA's World Cup qualifying.

Stu Holden recently returned for the first time since 2010 and has made appearances in two matches, including time as a sub in the US' 2-0 win over Panama on June 11th in Seattle.

Alejandro Bedoya boasted five goals and four assists in 11 league games for Helsinborg. He was a late additon in the 2011 Gold Cup but ended up starting in four matches including the three in the knockout phase.

Da Marcus Beasley will captain this squad for the 2013 Gold Cup. Klinsmann noted his leadership and experience as being valuable in the tournament, and was quoted as saying "he can help connect some of the younger players to what we have been building."

MLS:

Jack McInerney and Corey Ashe are both seeking their first caps with this senior squad, and McInerney is tied for leading scorer in MLS with 10 goals. Chris Wondolowski tied Roy Lassiter's MLS record for most goals scored in a single season with 27.  He was an MLS Golden Boot winner and was also voted MVP, and has been named Player of the Month four times.

Tony Beltran and Will Bruin both made their first appearance in a draw against Canada earlier this year.
