Bio

Juan Manuel Mata García was born in Ocón de Villafranca, Burgos on 28 April 1988. A skillful attacking midfielder, who can also play on the wing, Mata is known for his technical ability, vision and creativity, which allow him to create chances for teammates on a regular basis. In addition, he is able to add a direct goal threat of his own.

Mata began playing youth team football for Real Oviedo in 1998 and then moved to Real Madrid's academy in 2003. After graduating to play for their 'B' team, Real Madrid Castilla, he signed for Valencia ahead of the 2007-08 season. It was at Valencia that Mata made a name for himself in the professional game, being named the club's Best Young Player in his first season and reaching double figures for goals in both 2008–09 and 2009–10.

In the summer of 2011, he transferred to Chelsea for a fee of £25.5 million and quickly established himself as one of the team's key players. Mata helped the side to win the UEFA Champions League and FA Cup in 2011-12 and the UEFA Europa League in 2012-13. For both of those seasons, he was voted as Chelsea's Player of the Year and in 2012-13 he was included in the PFA Team of the Year. However, after Jose Mourinho returned as Chelsea manager for the 2013-14 season, Mata fell out of favour and experienced a lack of regular first team opportunities. As a result, he moved to Manchester United during the January transfer window, for a club record fee of £37.1 million.

On the international stage, Mata played a small part in Spain's successful 2010 FIFA World Cup campaign and made a greater contribution to their Euro 2012 win, scoring in the 4-0 final victory over Italy. Furthermore, he played a key role in his country's 2011 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship win and was named as the competition's Golden Player.
