Quarterback Tajh Boyd brings smiles to Clemson fans

Boyd committed to West Virginia last year but switched to Tennessee in November shortly before Phillip Fulmer was fired. Fulmer's successor, Lane Kiffin, told Boyd's father he would honor the scholarship but that Tajh wasn't a fit for the Vols' offense. Tajh dropped the Vols and reopened recruiting, but after the all-star game Tennessee checked to see if he'd reconsider. Tajh said he has never spoken to Kiffin. Boyd visited Ohio State and Oregon in December. Clemson entered the picture shortly before Christmas and pressed him to visit, but Boyd wasn't sure he'd have time. He was trying to complete his final high school class online and wanted to announce his college choice then undergo surgery so he might have a chance to compete in the fall. Something about the Clemson staff appealed to his father. Tim Boyd, a dockworker and former Navy seaman, is an avid fan. He had watched the Tigers' first game after Dabo Swinney was selected interim coach and was impressed with the team's energy despite an emotionally draining week. He also saw Swinney's introductory news conference and was struck by his sincerity. |
