Coaches who need to save their butt in '09

Some coaches kept their job this winter, much to the surprise of the team's fanbase. But that doesn't mean those coaches are out of the woods.

Which coach from around the country do you think will enter the 2009 season already standing on thin ice?

Marvin Lewis, the tribe has spoken

There are three coaches in the league with a losing record: Dick Jauron, Marvin Lewis, and Gary Kubiak. There are two with a .500 record: Brad Childress and Jim Zorn. Zorn is entering just his second year and Kubiak, who's entering his fourth year, had a good end of the 2008 year taking 5 of 6; both are safe for 2009. Childress, who squeaked into the playoffs may have saved his job even if he does miss the 2009 playoffs but ends with a decent record. That leaves Jauron and Lewis, to pick one, I'll say Lewis. His record has dropped each season since 2005, where it peaked at 11-5, then 8-8, 7-9, and most recent, 4-11-1. Can that record go any lower? Yes. With Lewis there in 2010? No. Either win big, or pack your bags.

The thread was about NCAA coaches

I would say Charlie Weis from Notre Dame, along with Indiana University's Bill Lynch. Lynch was horrid this year with the Hoosiers and the honeymoon is officially over for Billy.
As for the Irish and Weis, anything less than eight wins this season and he has to go. Let's not forget this was a program that lost to lowly Syracuse last year. Weis is a great recruiter, no doubt about that, but he is a terrible college coach.
I would also put South Carolina's Steve Spurrier in the mix. He has done all he can do with the Gamecocks. You have to wonder how much longer he stays around at his step down job.

As for the NFL assessment, look for Marvin Lewis' job to be very safe. As someone who covered the Bengals, I can tell you he is safe, especially if Carson Palmer comes back without missing a beat and they go 8-8 in 2009.

How can anyone have expectations for the Indiana job? Terry Hoeppner did a hell of a job there until he got sick, but it would take a miracle for someone to succeed. Lynch is struggling because of the school. Until Indiana commits to football, its coaches have no prayer.
