HONOLULU (Ticker) -- Aina quarterback Paul Smith scored twice
to continue his wonderful postseason en route to a 38-7 victory
over the Kai in the 62nd Hula Bowl on Saturday.
Smith (Tulsa), who threw for 312 yards and five touchdowns in a
63-7 route of Bowling Green in the GMAC Bowl game on Sunday,
converted rushing scores from one and six yards out in the first
quarter for the Aina.
The Aina scored the first 24 points of the contest until Kai
signal-caller Kevin O'Connell (San Diego State) found receiver
Robert Jordan (California) for a 15-yard TD with 5:36 left in
the third quarter.
Smith - who accounted for 60 TDs in his final season with the
Golden Hurricane, including 13 on the ground - completed just
5-of-12 passes for 47 yards for the Aina.
The Aina (East) continued its recent domination of this all-star
classic, winning for the sixth consecutive time largely due to
forcing six turnovers and holding the Kai (West) to 224 total
yards.
The 31-point margin was the second-most in Hula Bowl history,
trailing only the North's 50-6 rout of the South in 1968.
O'Connell went 10-for-20 for 132 yards and one TD for the Kai.
