Alabama hires McElwain

TUSCALOOSA, Alabama (Ticker) -- Jim McElwain, who spent last
season as the offensive coordinator at Fresno State, was hired
at Alabama on Wednesday to fill the same role.

Under McElwain's watch, Fresno State improved from 4-8 in 2006
to 9-4 last season. The Bulldogs were 32nd in the Football Bowl
Subvision in scoring, averaging 32.9 points per game.

He spent 2006 as the Oakland Raiders' quarterbacks coach after a
three tenure as the assistant head coach at Michigan State.

"Jim is a phenomenal coach and we are thrilled to have him
aboard," Alabama coach Nick Saban said. "He did an outstanding
job last year at Fresno State. Their improvement on offense,
especially in the play of their quarterback, was tremendous."

Alabama faltered down the stretch last year, losing four
straight following a 6-2 start. The Crimson Tide (7-6) did beat
Colorado, 30-24, in the Independence Bowl to salvage a winning
record in Saban's first season as coach.

"I'm looking forward to the challenge and I'm ready to hit the
ground running as soon as I arrive in Tuscaloosa," McElwain
said. "Coach Saban and his staff have the Alabama football
program on the rise."

Alabama ranked seventh in the SEC in scoring last season,
averaging 27.1 points per game.
