Clemson DE Merling to enter NFL draft

editor1  |Jan 10,2008

CLEMSON, South Carolina (Ticker) -- Clemson defensive end
Phillip Merling announced on Thursday that he will forego his
senior season and enter the NFL draft.

The 6-5, 280-pound Merling, who was named Atlantic Coast
Conference Defensive Lineman of the Week three times during the
2007 season, led the Tigers in tackles for loss with 17 and
sacks with seven. He also had 78 tackles to rank fourth on the
team, and first among defensive linemen.

"We wish Phillip the best in his pursuit of a NFL career,"
Clemson coach Tommy Bowden said. "He has the ability to be
successful in his professional career. I advised him to remain
for his senior year, but he felt this was the best decision for
his future. I will help him any way I can as he prepares for
the draft."

Merling joins running back James Davis as Clemson juniors who
will enter the NFL draft.
