HONOLULU (Ticker) -- The fallout from June Jones' departure
continued Tuesday as Hawaii announced it will buy out the final
two years of athletic director Herman Frazier's contract.
Jones stepped down as Hawaii coach on Saturday, less than a week
after the Warriors completed the best season in school history
with a 41-10 loss to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl.
"The University of Hawaii ... and Herman Frazier recognize that
in the best interests of the athletics program, will buy out Mr.
Frazier's contract which expires on July 31, 2010, for the sum
of $312,510," the school said in a release.
Frazier's inability to keep Jones reportedly cost him his job.
School chancellor Virginia Hinshaw will recommend associate
athletics director Carl Clapp as acting athletic director.
According to the Honolulu Advertiser, Jones cited a lack of
loyalty and commitment from the school as his reasons for
leaving.
On Monday, Jones was named the coach at Southern Methodist,
accepting a five-year contract worth a reported $2 million per
season.
The 53-year-old Frazier shouldered much of the blame for
Hawaii's inability to keep their highly popular coach, who built
the Warriors' program virtually from scratch.
Jones left Hawaii as the winningest coach in school history,
posting a 76-41 record in his nine seasons. This past season,
the Warriors finished 12-1 and earned their first BCS berth.
Hawaii made an effort over the weekend to retain Jones, with
Governor Linda Lingle even getting involved, but it turned out
to be too late.
Hawaii president David McClain expressed disappointment with the
way Jones' contract situation was handled.
"I want to apologize to our fans and all of Hawaii for matters
getting to this stage in the first place," McClain told the
Honolulu Advertiser. "Exceptional performance deserves
exceptional recognition, and your university was slow to step
up."
