McMackin accepts Hawaii job

editor1  |Jan 16,2008

HONOLULU (Ticker) -- Greg McMackin apparently has been tabbed
as June Jones' successor at Hawaii.

According to the Honolulu Advertiser, McMackin, the Warriors'
defensive coordinator last season, accepted the job Tuesday
night and will be introduced on Wednesday during a news
conference scheduled for 8 a.m. local time.

Hawaii, reeling since Jones' resignation, has made no official
announcement.

Known as defensive specialist, McMackin was endorsed by Jones
and Hawaii assistant coaches Jeff Reinebold and Rich Miano,
according to the Advertiser.

McMackin previously served as defensive coordinator at the
University of Miami (1993-95) and with the NFL's Seattle
Seahawks (1995-98).

His immediate task at Hawaii would be holding the program
together.

Even with a 41-10 loss to Georgia in the Sugar Bowl, the
Warriors completed the best season in school history at 12-1.

However, the good feeling evaporated when Jones abruptedly
resigned on January 5 after nine nine years at the school to
take the job at SMU.

Athletic director Herman Frazier shouldered much of the blame
and was fired just three days after Jones' departure.

Jones left as the winningest coach in school history, posting 76
wins in his nine seasons. He guided the Warriors to six bowl
games and two Western Athletic Conference championships.

McMackin returned to Hawaii last season for his second coaching
stint with the team. He also was on Jones' original staff in
1999.
