The NFF is approaching another sellout of its Annual Awards
Dinner, which this year will celebrate the organization's 61st
anniversary on Tuesday, Dec. 9 in the Grand Ballroom of the
historic Waldorf=Astoria in New York City.

Hundreds of the nation's top business executives, community
leaders, college coaches and administrators who attend the
black-tie affair will witness the induction of the 2008 College
Football Hall of Fame Class as well as the presentation of the
organization's highest honor, the NFF Gold Medal, to former U.S.
Senator and famed astronaut John Glenn. Business titan and
philanthropist T. Boone Pickens will receive the Distinguished
American Award and the Draddy Trophy will be awarded to the
nation's top scholar- athlete.

2008 College Football Hall of Fame inductee Troy Aikman and
former Dallas Cowboys teammate Daryl Johnston (Syracuse)
recently attended a practice at SMU... 2007 College Football
Hall of Famer Anthony Thompson will serve on the 13-member
committee to find a new athletics director at Indiana. Thompson
serves as the university's assistant AD for development... 2005
College Football Hall of Famer Mark May will serve as the
keynote speaker at Pitt Football's 2008 Kickoff Luncheon on
Friday, Aug. 29... College Football Hall of Famer Charley Trippi
of Georgia and Patrick Garbin, author of "The 50 Greatest Plays
in Georgia Bulldogs History," will be on hand Friday, Aug. 29,
on the UGa campus to celebrate the book release before the
Bulldogs host Georgia Southern in their Aug. 30 season opener...
2008 Divisional Hall of Fame inductee John Randle of Texas
A&M-Kingsville (formerly Texas A&I) was recently selected to the
Minnesota Vikings' Ring of Honor and the Lone Star Conference
Hall of Honor. Fellow Javelina and College Football Hall of
Famer Darrell Green was recently inducted into the Pro Football
Hall of Fame.

Newest members of the NFF's National Scholar- Athlete Alumni
Association: Josh Bloom (Dartmouth); 2007 College Football Hall
of Fame inductee Rex Kern (Ohio State); Michael Perrin (Texas);
and John Scovell (Texas Tech).

The NFF National Capital Region Chapter hosted its fourth annual
"FB 101 Clinic for Women" on Aug. 9 at James Madison High
School in Vienna, Va. Forty-two women from over six different
cities attended the clinic, which was directed by coach Bill
Ramseyer, a Divisional College Football Hall of Fame nominee and
former head coach at University of Virginia-Wise. Mary
Ramseyer, Coach Ramseyer's wife of 44 years, spoke about the
importance of supporting their sons and making them understand
the importance of being a part of a team from a mother's
perspective.

The NFF Las Vegas Chapter was officially renamed the Bill
Ireland Las Vegas Chapter in honor of the late UNLV and
Nevada-Reno coach. Ireland founded the chapter and served as its
first president.

Two-Minute Drill

GOP Presidential candidate John McCain paid a visit to the
Marshall football team on Aug. 6. McCain told the players how
important teamwork is when it comes to success, reflecting on
his days as a prisoner of war in Vietnam for over five years. He
wore a green Marshall hat and even called three offensive
plays, all going for touchdowns... Alabama head coach Nick Saban
is featured on the cover of Forbes magazine as the most
powerful coach in sports... South Carolina head coach Steve
Spurrier has begun his 14-week "Carolina Calls" live radio
program from Wild Wings restaurant in Columbia... Florida
State's Chief Osceola and horse Renegade will travel to
Jacksonville, Fla., for traditional pregame ceremonies when the
Seminoles face Colorado. Their last regular-season appearance
away from Tallahassee was in 1994 when FSU met Notre Dame in
Orlando... Season ticket sales at SMU are up 50 percent from
2007... Jim Dent, author of "Twelve Mighty Orphans,"
participated in a book signing at the grand opening of Borders
in Allen, Texas... Tuskegee and Alabama A&M will meet in the
25th Anniversary Circle City Classic at Indianapolis' new Lucas
Oil Stadium at 4 p.m. (EDT) on Oct. 4... Texas Tech set a school
season ticket record with sales exceeding 41,100 last week...
Nevada will face Brigham Young in Provo, Utah, in 2010 to
complete the final game in a three-contest agreement, which
started with a 2001 bout between the schools... Baylor and
Stephen F. Austin have contracted to play a game in 2011...
Western Kentucky footballers helped freshmen students and
parents move in personal belongings during "Move-In Sunday" in
Bowling Green yesterday. Rice players participated in a similar
activity on campus, signifying the end of their two-a-day
portion of fall camp... Sunbelt Rentals, Inc. has launched a
scholarship program to recognize the work done in the classroom,
campus and the community by students within the Big South
Conference... Texas A&M's new mascot, a collie to be named
Reveille VIII, will be introduced during the Aggies' home opener
against Arkansas State on Aug. 30... R&B group Bell Biv DeVoe
will perform at the State Fair of Texas on Oct. 4 before the
Grambling-Prairie View football classic... Sports Illustrated
senior writer Stewart Mandel recently launched Stewart Mandel's
Conference Showdown to benefit DonorsChoose.org, challenging
college football fans to demonstrate which conference has the
biggest heart. The Showdown will be a featured part of Mandel's
College Football Mailbag and is an opportunity for fans to make

The Cotton Bowl will host the first Dallas Lone Star Classic
between Texas Southern and Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Sat., Nov. 29.
It will also host a Division II matchup between Texas
A&M-Commerce and East Central (Okla.) on Sat., Oct. 18... The
University of Houston Regents Committee has approved end zone
expansions and renovations for Robertson Stadium... The Board of
Regents Facilities Committee approved an expansion of Texas
Tech's Jones AT&T Stadium that will expand capacity by 1,000
seats.

College Football Hall of Fame inductee Kellen Winslow, Sr. has
been selected as director of athletics at Central State
(Ohio)... Eddie Griffin was named executive vice president and
chief operating officer of the Jim Thorpe Association and the
Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame.

The Dick Butkus Award announced 65 "watch list" candidates for
the coming campaign. The Walter Camp Foundation announced 35
candidates for its Player of the Year watch list... Syracuse
will honor distinguished former student-athletes its annual
LetterWinners of Distinction on Sept. 11. Football honorees
include S. Jeffery Bastable, John Lobon and Wally Mahle.

CBS Sports and the Southeastern Conference have signed a new
15-year football telecast agreement... KATV-TV in Little Rock,
Ark., will assign its television and radio sports rights for
Arkansas athletics to ISP Sports starting with '08 football. ISP
also will manage all multimedia rights for UA athletics as the
new Razorback Sports Properties... New Mexico has inked a
six-year apparel and marketing contract with Nike and will have
the capacity of 1.5 million listeners-plus on the Lobo Radio
Network in football for the first time this season... FSN
Southwest will air the Texas-Florida Atlantic tussle on Aug. 30
at 6:00 p.m. (CDT) live pay-per-view as part of the Big 12
Conference Special Order Sports programming... CBS College
Sports Network will air at least 45 games live nationally and
has brought back Notre Dame's Aaron Taylor as an in-game
analyst... KWCE-TV will serve as the exclusive Central Louisiana
affiliate for the Southland Conference Television Network. MYTX
18, based in Tyler, Texas, will be the exclusive East Texas
affiliate network.

Jim "Hoss" Brock, 74, the longtime executive director of the
Cotton Bowl Athletic Association, passed away last Thursday in
Plano, Texas. Brock had been hospitalized since February 14
after sustaining the first in a series of strokes. Brock served
as the executive director of the CBAA for 14 years from
1979-1992 and was elected to the AT&T Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame
in 2005... Carl "Robby" Robinson, former Colorado football
player, passed away on Aug. 7... Huntingdon (Ala.) College
freshman DL Sam Collins died last Friday.
