COLUMBUS, Ohio (Ticker) -- Ohio State defensive end Vernon
Gholston announced Friday that he will forego his senior season
and enter the NFL draft.
A second-team All-American, Gholston was one of the leaders on
the nation's top ranked defense.
Gholston recorded 37 tackles - 15 1/2 for a loss - and set a
school record with 14 sacks in 13 games. The 6-4 260-pounder
also set a school record for sacks in a game (4).
"It is with profound emotion, yet great anticipation, that I
announce my decision to forgo my senior year of collegiate
eligibility as a member of the Ohio State football team and
enter the 2008 National Football League draft," Gholston said in
a statement. "I reached this conclusion through strategic
meditation with my close family, coaches and teammates."
Gholston had three tackles, including one sack, in a 38-24 loss
to Louisiana State in the Bowl Championship Series title game on
Monday.
While Gholston is leaving, cornerback Malcolm Jenkins announced
he is returning for his senior season.
A second-team All-American and Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist,
Jenkins recorded 40 tackles and four interceptions in 13 games.
The 6-1, 202-pound Jenkins had three tackles and an interception
in the loss to LSU.
"After a great deal of deliberation, I have decided to remain at
Ohio State for 2008 to complete my degree and my football
career," Jenkins said.
"I don't feel that I've accomplished everything I can accomplish
in college football, and there's still a lot for me to conquer
and shoot for: the national championship, another Big Ten
championship, the Thorpe Award. And I really look forward to
the honors and perks associated with being a senior on this
team."
