EUGENE, Oregon (Ticker) -- Todd Doxey, a redshirt freshman
defensive back at the University of Oregon, died following a
swimming accident this past weekend. He was 19.
According to a statement released by the school, Doxey had
joined several of his teammates on Sunday afternoon to float
down the McKenzie River.
Although most of the party started down the river in
inner-tubes, Doxey decided to jump off the Marcola Road Bridge,
according to a Lane Country Sheriff's office report.
After swimming across the current toward a boat ramp, Doxey
began experiencing problems and could not hold his head above
the water. The rest of the party already had floated downstream
and were unable to help Doxey, who eventually was retrieved from
the water by another boat.
"I understand that people did everything that they could - the
paramedics, the ambulance, the doctors and the players who were
there," said Oregon head coach Mike Bellotti, who was
vacationing in California this past weekend. "It's obviously a
very helpless feeling for me not to be there."
Doxey was taken to McKenzie-Williamette Hospital at 3:55 p.m.
local time - nearly 40 minutes after the accident occurred - and
was transferred to Sacred Heart Medical Center approximately 2
1/2 hours later. He was pronounced dead at 8:06 p.m. Sunday.
"This is a heartbreaking situation for Todd's family, friends,
teammates and classmates," school president Dave Frohnmayer
said. "We extend our deepest sympathies to everyone touched by
this terrible accident."
"Any time a young man or woman dies, it is a tragedy," Bellotti
added. "It's hard to understand why. My heart goes out to his
family, to our players, some whom were there and some who will
find out about it, and it's just one of those things we don't
have answers for."
